Planning to bring an e-bike to the Playa this year? Great idea. An e-bike can make exploring the city, camps, and art installations much easier—if you bring the right kind. Here’s everything you need to know before you roll in.
All Jager Bikes Playa are Class 2
✅ What Kind of E-Bikes Are Allowed?
Only Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are permitted on the Playa.
-
Class 1: Pedal-assist only (the motor helps you when you pedal)
-
Class 2: Pedal-assist + throttle (you can use the motor without pedaling)
Both types must:
-
Have pedals that actually work
-
Use a motor that’s 750 watts or less
-
Be limited to 20 mph or less (even if your bike can go faster, it shouldn’t)
🐢 Speed Limit on the Playa: 5 MPH
This is not a racetrack. The entire Playa is a pedestrian-heavy space filled with art, dust, people in wild costumes, and surprise parades. For safety, all bikes—electric or not—must stick to a 5 mph speed limit at all times.
If your e-bike looks or rides like a motorcycle or mini-scooter, it’s not going to fly. Keep it simple, silent, and safe.
❌ Not Allowed:
-
Class 3 e-bikes (go up to 28 mph)
-
Scooters, mopeds, and gas-powered bikes
-
DIY e-bikes with oversized motors or wild throttle mods
-
Anything that’s too fast, too loud, or too dangerous
You can read more about it on the official site
🔋 Charging & Battery Tips
-
Bring extra batteries if you can
-
Consider a solar charging setup (shade and power aren’t always easy to find)
-
Protect your electronics from dust—it’s everywhere
🌚 Light Up Your Ride
At night, you must be visible. Add front and rear lights, spoke LEDs, glowing art—whatever makes your ride stand out. Not just for fun—it’s for safety.
🛠️ Maintenance Reminder
The Playa is brutal on bikes. Sand, dust, and heat can mess with your motor. If you’re storing your bike for next year, clean it up well and protect your battery.
🎨 Bonus: Decorate It!
Style is part of the magic. Add a fur seat, neon lights, or turn your bike into a roaming jellyfish. Just make sure it still works safely and doesn’t blind anyone.
